Reno 1868 FC and Sacramento Republic FC announced on Tuesday the burgeoning rivalry between the clubs had officially been named, with the Donner Pass Derby being voted as the winner of an online poll conducted over the past week.

The vote was taken before Saturday’s meeting between the clubs at Papa Murphy’s Park, which will also serve as a key game in the race for the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs. Reno enters the game in fourth position in the standings, while Sacramento sits two points back in fifth.

Saturday’s match in Sacramento will be the third competitive match this season between the two squads and first with the Donner Pass Derby name.

Located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the Donner Pass sits close-by to Interstate 80, which connects Reno to Sacramento.

"We are happy to continue our rivalry with Sacramento with this name chosen by the fans,” 1868 FC General Manager Andy Smith said. “The ‘Donner Pass Derby’ is and will remain one of the top rivalries in the USL.”

Sacramento took the first match this season in a 2-0 win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on May 31. Reno fought back with a 2-0 win of its own on June 10 at Greater Nevada Field.

Saturday’s match begins at 8 p.m. PT at Papa Murphy’s Park in Sacramento. Reno 1868 FC will host a watch party at Great Basin Brewing Co.
