Independence return home to host Steel FC

MATTHEWS, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence play host to Bethlehem Steel FC on Wednesday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews for the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3 with the Eastern Conference-leading Independence looking to bounce back from their first loss since June. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charlotte Independence news and notes

  • Current record: 11-4-7, 40pts

  • The Independence return home after falling 3-1 to Ottawa Fury FC in their last outing, a defeat that ended the club’s 12-game undefeated streak.

  • David Spies scored with 15 minutes to go to cut the Independence’s deficit to one goal against Fury FC, but Ottawa scored late to seal the victory.

  • Charlotte is on an eight-game undefeated streak at home, including a record of 4-0-1 at the Sportsplex at Matthews since its debut at the venue on June 17.

  • The Independence are two points clear of Louisville City FC as Week 22 of the USL regular season begins, but have played two games more than its Eastern Conference rival.

  • Steel FC recorded its second consecutive victory with a 3-1 win against Toronto FC II on Sunday at Goodman Stadium.

  • Bethlehem midfielder James Chambers scored what proved to be the game-winner with 10 minutes to go from the penalty spot before Chris Nanco added an insurance goal in stoppage time to ice the victory.

  • Jamaican international Cory Burke scored the opening goal for Bethlehem for his third goal of the season, and first in league action since a 3-1 win against Harrisburg on May 28, but is suspended for Wednesday’s game due to caution accumulation.

  • Steel FC sits in sixth position in the USL’s Eastern Conference entering Week 22, which also sees the side play host to second-place Louisville City FC on Sunday evening.
