In Fall’s Absence, Who Steps Up for FCC?

Three options that could play a key role in Tuesday’s Open Cup clash

CINCINNATI – With Djiby Fall suspended for FC Cincinnati for what is likely the biggest game in club history in Tuesday’s night’s 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinal due to yellow card accumulation, there’s a big hole to fill for FCC Head Coach Alan Koch. Entering Tuesday’s game with the New York Red Bulls at a sold-out Nippert Stadium, Fall has been the only player to have scored in open play for FCC in this year’s Open Cup.

With the club’s leading scorer absent, who is most likely to fill the scoring void on Tuesday night?

1. F Danni König

König is the most obvious candidate, with his eight goals this season just three behind Fall. König also has proven scoring success throughout the USL. While at OKC Energy FC for the last two seasons, König scored 26 goals. Traded for this May, the Danish forward was specifically brought to Cincinnati to boost the club’s attack. Tuesday’s semifinal is his opportunity to show everyone FCC is not dependent on just Fall. König has certainly proven he can score in bunches, scoring 21 goals in his first USL season, and does come in on some form, having scored the last goal for FC Cincinnati in league play, against Orlando City B on August 5th.

2. M Aodhan Quinn

In a game like Tuesday’s, set pieces are likely to be key for both sides, which makes Quinn – who poses a real threat from free kicks in particular – a potential key to success for FCC. Quinn’s ability is a vital skill in any soccer match, but in a match which is bound to be tense and tight, given the stage, Cincinnati will want to take advantage of any set piece opportunities that presents itself, and in Quinn they have an impressive taker. Add that Quinn was serving his own one-game suspension this weekend, and will be fresh for the Open Cup clash on Tuesday. The stage could well be set for Quinn to take his place in Cincinnati, and American, soccer history.

3. M Jimmy McLaughlin

McLaughlin may be a way off the pace from Fall and König this season in the league, but he has a proven goal-scoring record and has popped up from midfield for three goals this year. McLaughlin will be a vital part of Cincinnati’s play, a regular provider of crosses whose speed poses a challenge to opposing defenders. With two assists on top of his three goals, McLaughlin is accurate, having managed 18 shots on target, and in a vital cup match, that could well produce a goal.

While FC Cincinnati will obviously not care where the goals come from, they need to come from somewhere, in König, Quinn, and McLaughlin they have three possible options as a replacement for Fall.
