TUKWILA, Wash. – Seattle Sounders FC 2 cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory against Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at the Starfire Sports Complex on Sunday evening. Irvin Parra led the way for S2, scoring the game’s opening goal and then providing the assist on the Seattle’s third goal by Felix Chenkam. Zach Mathers also scored his ninth goal of the season, as Seattle improved to 8-13-2 overall and 5-6-1 at home this season. Vancouver drops to 4-12-6 overall this campaign and 2-8-2 on the road.

Scoring:
21’ – SEA – Irvin Parra (Sam Rogers)
38’ – SEA – Zach Mathers
51’ – SEA – Felix Chenkam (Irvin Parra)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Seattle capitalized on Vancouver’s errors to end its winless run at six games. Despite the victory being the first for S2 since July 1 – which was a 2-0 result against Vancouver – the club now sits just three points behind OKC Energy FC, which is in eighth place in the Western Conference. Nine games remain for S2 this regular season, including five matches on the road.

  • 2. While WFC2 is not mathematically eliminated from the Western Conference playoff race, the club is in dire need of points down the stretch. With Sunday’s result, Vancouver is now winless in its last 11 games, with that victory occurring on June 4. Matters were made worse in the 84th minute for Vancouver when forward Myer Bevan was shown a red card. Looking ahead, the club has 10 games remaining, including six home matches.

  • 3. Irvin Parra was Sunday’s star, but Zach Mathers continues to score goals this season. The 23-year-old netted his team-high ninth goal of the regular season for S2 in the 38th minute, and he needed no help in securing it either. The midfielder pressed Vancouver goalkeeper Spencer Richey and stole the ball away from him before tapping it in. With the goal, Mathers now has the fourth-most tallies in the Western Conference.
