OTTAWA – Ottawa Fury has ended a great Charlotte Independence run and thrown a wrench in the eastern conference run-in with a 3-1 win. Eddie Edward scored the opening goal for Ottawa Fury off a perfect free kick swung in by Gerardo Bruna in the 38th minute after Joel Johnson’s foul. Bruna turned scorer, using his own footwork to steal possession, run in to the box and bury the chance. Charlotte Independence set up a tight finish in the 75th minute when David Spies was played through by Enzo Martinez and easily finished the chance for a goal that would turn out to be a consolation goal. Ottawa wrapped up the win in the 87th minute with a first professional goal to Adonijah Reid, who was played through by Carl Haworth.

Scoring:
37’ - OTT - Eddie Edward (Gerardo Bruna)
52’ - OTT - Gerardo Bruna
75’ - CLT - David Spies (Enzo Martinez)
87’ - OTT - Adonijah Reid (Carl Haworth)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Ottawa overcame a physical opening to take the lead in the latter stages of the half, using Charlotte’s physicality against them to force a free kick in range, and put Johnson on a yellow card, Ottawa did not get a great deal of clear chances, using the physicality of Charlotte against them.

  • 2. Bruna finally broke through for his first goal in Ottawa colors as he scored a brilliant solo goal to assert Ottawa’s dominance of the match, the amount of chances Bruna was able to set up will please Ottawa, who are getting a good return from the Argentine.

  • 3. 13 is unlucky for some, and it was certainly unlucky for Charlotte Independence as their unbeaten run came to an end at 12 games. Charlotte will now have to fight to hold on to top spot in the East, which has now gotten tighter thanks to this result.
