Pittsburgh tops Harrisburg 3-0 to snap winless run, stay in playoff hunt

HARRISBURG, Pa.The Pittsburgh Riverhounds claimed the 2017 Keystone Derby Cup after earning a 3-0 victory against the Harrisburg City Islanders at FNB Field on Saturday evening. Jamaican international Romeo Parkes scored the game-winner in the 28th minute, intercepting a pass from Harrisburg’s back line before walking his way into the box and firing a low shot by goalkeeper Brandon Miller. Chevaughn Walsh scored two goals in the second half to help the Riverhounds cruise to a comfortable win. Looking to make a playoff push in the Eastern Conference, the Riverhounds improve to 6-8-9 on the year. The City Islanders move to 6-12-6 – three points behind the Riverhounds.

Scoring:
28’ – PGH – Romeo Parkes
56’ – PGH – Chevaughn Walsh
76’ – PGH – Chevaughn Walsh (Romeo Parkes)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Saturday night’s contest was the third and final meeting between the two Pennsylvania-based clubs, as the Riverhounds officially clinched the cup with a 2-0-1 record against the City Islanders this campaign. And the Riverhounds made winning it look simple this season, recording a shutout in each outing. Pittsburgh has now won the competition two times (2015, 2017), while Harrisburg won the cup in 2016.
  • 2. Saturday’s result for the Riverhounds was important for multiple reasons. The victory is Pittsburgh’s first road win since May 13, and it also ends the club’s winless run at seven games. With only nine games remaining for the Riverhounds during the regular season, the road win also keeps the team in the playoff hunt.
  • 3. The City Islanders fell for the 12th time this season and have not won a match since July 15, but the team is not out of the playoff race after performing well at the beginning of the season. A couple of defensive mistakes cost the home side dearly on Saturday, but the team has eight games remaining in the regular season to make a late run at finishing above the red line.
