Riverhounds’ Hertzog nets stunner, while Battery earn road point

PITTSBURGHThe Pittsburgh Riverhounds were slowly cruising to victory at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday evening, but a late goal from Charleston Battery midfielder Maikel Chang saw the sides finish even in a 2-2 tie. The Battery jumped out to an early lead via a goal from a corner kick by Atlanta United FC loanee Miles Robinson, but the Riverhounds responded 10 minutes later from a corner kick of their own. Romeo Parkes, who connected well with Corey Hertzog for a scoring chance in the eighth minute of play, sent a ball to the back post – where Victor Souto stood all alone to bury the cross. In the second half, Hertzog scored a incredible curler from the left side of the box to hand the Riverhounds the lead. However, Chang hit a powerful low strike past by goalkeeper Keasel Broome in the 84th minute to earn the Battery a road point. With the tie, the Riverhounds move to 5-7-8 on the year, while the Battery move to 10-4-6 this campaign.

Scoring:
11’ – CHS – Miles Robinson (Justin Portillo)
21’ – PGH – Victor Souto (Romeo Parkes)
62’ – PGH – Corey Hertzog
84’ – CHS - Maikel Chang (Ataulla Guerra)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Miles Robinson, selected No. 2 overall by Atlanta United FC in the 2017 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, impressed on both ends of the field on Wednesday evening. The former Syracuse University and Premier Development League standout scored his first professional goal in the 11th minute of play, powering in a beautiful service from Justin Portillo via a corner kick. He also completed 92.7 percent of his passes while making five clearances and completing three interceptions.
  • 2. The Battery still sit atop the Eastern Conference standings, but the club is now winless in its last four matchups. The absence of Romario Williams, the Battery’s leading scorer to date, has contributed heavily to the team’s performances, as Charleston has only netted three goals in their last four outings and will be eagerly awaiting the return of Williams, as he finishes international duty with Jamaica on Wednesday.
  • 3. Corey Hertzog netted his seventh goal of the regular season for the Riverhounds, continuing to lead the club since joining in January of 2016. The former Reading United AC talent was named to the USL All-League Second Team in 2016 and continues to be one of the standouts of the league, scoring eye-opening strikes, such as the right-footed curler he sunk on Wednesday.
