Former Union midfielder adds creativity in attacking third

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rowdies announced on Thursday the club had signed Walter Restrepo for the remainder of the 2017 USL season, pending league and federation approval. Per club and league policy, further contract details were not disclosed.

A former member of the Philadelphia Union, Restrepo was released by the New York Cosmos to sign with the Rowdies. He scored two goals and had two assists in 13 games for the Cosmos this season. Restrepo will be available for selection in Saturday’s game against the USL Eastern Conference-leading Charleston Battery at Al Lang Stadium.

"I'm very excited to start a new chapter in my career," said Restrepo. "I was aware that the Rowdies were interested in me and we were able to reach an agreement where Tampa Bay, the Cosmos and I all benefited. In my years playing against Tampa Bay, the fans have always been impressive so I can't wait to play in front of them as a member of the Rowdies."

Restrepo made four appearances for the Union in Major League Soccer, and also competed on loan in the USL for Bethlehem Steel FC in the 2016 season. In Tampa Bay, Restrepo will be reunited with Leo Fernandes, a teammate with the Cosmos and Philadelphia.

“Walter is a player we’ve known for a long time and he’s really exciting to watch,” Rowdies Head Coach Stuart Campbell said. “He’s got the killer instinct to take on defenders and go for goal, which will complement our current roster nicely. Along with his goalscoring abilities, Walter has also proved to be a threat when it comes down to creating chances for his teammates."

The 29-year-old Restrepo has also had prior stops with the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and San Antonio Scorpions, and has recorded 16 goals and 20 assists in his six-year career since arriving in the United States from his native Colombia.
