Home-and-home series kicks off under USL Game of the Week spotlight

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC and Orange County SC open a home-and-home series that will conclude in California on Saturday when they square off in the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3 on Wednesday night at H-E-B Park. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT, and the game will utilize the Video Assistant Referee system.

Rio Grande Valley FC news and notes

  • Current record: 6-7-2, 20pts

  • Rio Grande Valley returns to action for the first time since July 7, when it suffered a 4-0 defeat to the Swope Park Rangers at Children’s Mercy Victory Field.

  • The four-goal defeat matched the Toros’ heaviest loss of the season, having previously fallen 6-2 against Sacramento Republic FC on June 22.

  • The Toros have yet to catch fire offensively this season, sitting tied for 24th in the league with 17 goals as Memo Rodriguez and Ruben Luna each have three to lead the team.

  • With three losses in their last four games, the Toros have fallen to 10th in the USL Western Conference, but would move back into the top eight with a win on Wednesday.

Orange County SC news and notes

  • Current record: 5-4-3, 18pts

  • Orange County earned a 2-1 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Sunday in its last outing to extend its undefeated streak to four games.

  • Wuilito Fernandes had a goal and assist to lead the team to victory, while Monday Etim scored his first professional goal, which proved the game-winner.

  • Orange County faces 20 games in the final 13 weeks of the regular season, but is nicely poised to make a run at the Western Conference playoff places should it take advantage of its games in hand.

  • Goalkeeper Charlie Lyon is the only player to have played every minute of the season so far for OCSC, and is averaging 3.3 saves per game.
