PORTLAND, Ore. – Coming off the most lopsided defeated in USL history, the LA Galaxy II rebounded in strong fashion Sunday at Providence Park. LA rallied from a two-goal deficit and scored four unanswered en route to a 4-3 victory against the Portland Timbers 2. The last time out, LA suffered a 9-0 loss against Reno 1868 FC. Los Dos turned things around with the club’s best offensive effort of the season as Adrian Vera recorded a second-half brace. Justin Dhillon added a goal, and defender Tyler Turner started the rally with a first-half penalty kick just before halftime. Portland started off strong, with Jeremy Ebobisse and Max Ornstil each knotting their first of the season to gain a 2-0 lead through 33 minutes. Victor Arboleda added an 82nd-minute score to halt the Galaxy II’s momentum, but T2 wound up one goal short. LA improves to 4-11-2 (14 points) overall and 3-5-1 on the road. Portland remains winless at home (0-8-1) and moves to 1-14-2 (5 points) overall. Portland is also winless in 11 straight games (0-9-2).

Scoring:
25’ – POR – Jeremy Ebobisse (Marco Farfan)
33’ – POR – Max Ornstil (Jeremy Ebobisse)
44’ – LA – Tyler Turner (penalty)
47’ – LA – Adrian Vera (Justin Dhillon)
50’ – LA – Adrian Vera
60’ – LA – Justin Dhillon (Alejandro Covarrubias)
82’ – POR – Victor Arboleda (Marco Farfan)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. After conceding two goals, the Galaxy II looked to be in early trouble. The turning point ended up coming from a penalty kick late in the first half. Ryo Fujii drew the foul when the ball struck Marco Farfan’s arm. LA defender and captain Tyler Turner converted a convincing PK, driving the ball into the left of the frame as Portland goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh anticipated the other direction. In the second half, LA continued the run, not necessarily with heavy spells of attack, but by generating some good snippets of buildup. Adrian Vera netted a pair of goals in the 47th and 50th minutes, the second coming off a rebound. The winning goal ended up being Justin Dhillon’s in the 60th minute for his team-leading fifth of the season. Dhillon made sure he stayed even with Portland’s back line as he awaited a through ball from Alejandro Covarrubias. Once he got a foot on the ball, Dhillon made no mistake as he slotted his shot into the right of the frame for the team’s fourth of the game – a season-high offensive performance this season.

  • 2. Timbers 2 striker Jeremy Ebobisse, who starred at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup earlier this year, showcased his athleticism and nose for the goal to earn his first tally of the season in the 25th minute. Portland’s buildup was solid during that sequence, with Villyan Bijev changing the point of attack to find Farfan on the left. Farfan crossed toward the near left post, where LA goalkeeper Bennett Sneddon appeared to have an eye on intercepting. Unfortunately for the Galaxy II, Ebobisse leapt in front of him and headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead to open his goal-scoring account this year. Ebobisse then set up Max Ornstil, who drove his shot inside the far right post for a two-goal lead as Portland looked like it could be headed toward a long-awaited second victory.

  • 3. The match started auspiciously for LA, which could have notched a goal within the first 17 seconds. Dhillon almost capitalized on a defensive whiff of a clearance by Michael Amick, which allowed LA to have the first scoring chance. Dhillon, however, pushed his shot just wide, missing out on an opportunity to change the tone of the match. Fortunately for LA, the visiting club turned the tide to earn a confidence-building win.
