Fans continue to fill venues in record-setting season for league

TAMPA, Fla. – The United Soccer League surpassed the 1 million attendance mark on Saturday night, as the league’s record-setting season at the turnstiles continued in another exciting weekend of action.

The USL reached the mark faster than in any previous season, and keeps the league on course to surpass the 2-million mark for attendance this season. The official midway point of the 480-game regular season arrives on Sunday with the contest between Bethlehem Steel FC and the New York Red Bulls II at Goodman Stadium the 240th of the year.

Saturday night’s game between Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 – which saw the Switchbacks rally to earn a 2-2 draw at Weidner Field – proved the contest to send the league past the 1-million mark, as the race for a place in the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs continued in full force.

“We are delighted by the outstanding support the USL’s fans have brought throughout this season,” said USL President Jake Edwards. “As the level of competition has risen in the USL on the field, the commitment to providing great venues and entertainment for fans week-in and week-out by the league and its teams has been reflected in the support we have seen this year as the race to reach the USL Cup Playoffs builds over the course of this summer.”

The USL set a season-high for attendance in the 2016 season as almost 1.5 million fans attended the league’s games. That figure has continued to rise, with nine of the league’s teams averaging more than 5,000 fans per game this season, including expansion side Reno 1868 FC and both Phoenix Rising FC and Rio Grande Valley FC, both of which moved into outstanding new venues this offseason.
