Phoenix goalkeeper denies long-range rocket, records first clean sheet of season

TAMPA, Fla. – Phoenix Rising FC goalkeeper Josh Cohen claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 15 of the 2017 season as his outstanding fingertip save against Reno 1868 FC last Friday night earned the fans votes in the weekly online poll.

Cohen had already made a standout save to deny 1868 FC leading scorer Dane Kelly from the penalty spot earlier in the first half, but just before the halftime break pulled out an even better save from his bag. Recent Reno signing Darwin Espinal’s shot from outside the penalty area was pegged for the top-right corner of the net, but Cohen did just enough to turn the shot onto the crossbar, from where it caromed away to safety.

Cohen’s save, which helped earn his first shutout of the season, received 58 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning, and added to his Team of the Week selection earlier in the week. Ottawa Fury FC goalkeeper Callum Irving’s outstanding double-save against Louisville City FC on Saturday night finished second with 29 percent, while Swope Park Rangers’ Adrian Zendejas finished third with 13 percent for his standout stop to deny Tulsa’s Juan Pablo Caffa.
