Independence, Rhinos narrowly separated entering important matchup

MATTHEWS, N.C. – The Charlotte independence and Rochester Rhinos will square off for the second time this season separated by only one point and one position in the USL Eastern Conference standings when they meet at the Sportsplex at Matthews. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charlotte Independence news and notes

  • Current record: 5-3-4, 19pts

  • The Independence recorded a second consecutive victory with a 2-0 win against the Richmond Kickers last Saturday night at City Stadium.

  • Enzo Martinez scored both goals for the Independence, giving him six goals for the season, and was named to the USL Team of the Week for his performance.

  • The Independence are now in the eighth and final playoff place in the Eastern Conference, and enter the weekend only three points behind fourth-place Bethlehem Steel FC.

  • Charlotte will look to earn its first three-game winning streak of the season on Saturday. The Independence recorded one four-game and one three-game winning streak in 2016.

Rochester Rhinos news and notes

  • Current record: 5-2-5, 20pts

  • The Rhinos fell for only the second time this season last Friday night as Orlando City B took a 1-0 victory at Capelli Sport Stadium.

  • The defeat brought Rochester’s eight-game undefeated streak to an end, and marked the first time the side had lost at home since falling 1-0 to the Richmond Kickers on August 3, 2016.

  • Rhinos defender Sergio Campbell was named on Thursday to the Jamaica squad for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and is set to join the Reggae Boyz following Saturday’s game.

  • The Rhinos have not recorded multiple goals in a game since their last meeting with the Independence, a 4-0 win at Capelli Sport Stadium on April 29.
