CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy scored two goals in three minutes early in the second half to hand a 2-0 defeat to Sacramento Republic FC in the Round of 16 of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium. Former LA Galaxy II standouts Ariel Lassiter and Bradford Jamieson IV notched the goals for the Galaxy, who advanced to the Quarterfinals.

The Galaxy had back-to-back chances around the quarter-hour mark as Lassiter – who led Los Dos to the 2015 USL Western Conference Championship with 15 goals in the regular season and USL Cup Playoffs – had a chance that he put wide, and Jamieson IV’s saw his effort from outside the penalty area comfortably saved by Republic FC goalkeeper Evan Newton.

Republic FC carved out some good opportunities of its own as Augustin Cazarez put his shot over from Danny Barrera’s corner kick, while Tyler Blackwood tested Galaxy goalkeeper Jon Kempin in the 18th minute after good work by Barrera and Trevin Caesar.

The Galaxy almost connected in the 35th minute when a ball from the left by Jamieson was just out of the reach of Jack McInerney. Sacramento had the best chance of the half for both sides four minutes before the break, though, as a counterattack almost sprung Caesar, but the pass to the Trinidad & Tobago international was slightly under-hit and allowed the defense to recover.

LA drew first blood two minutes into the second half, however, as Lassiter curled a perfect free kick into the top-right corner of the net from 23 yards out past Newton. Two minutes later Jamieson – who has made 48 appearances in the USL for Los Dos – made it 2-0 as he fired home a shot that took a slight deflection after running hard at the Sacramento defense.

Chris Christian went close to pulling a goal back for Republic FC as his header was deflected wide in the 56th minute, and then Jeremy Hall headed over from the ensuing corner kick. Caesar also went close nine minutes later as he flashed a shot over the crossbar, while the Galaxy’s Jaime Villarreal almost added a third as he arrived late on the counterattack after good hold-up play by McInerney.

Villarreal also went close for the Galaxy with 13 minutes to go as Newton turned his shot from 12 yards toward the left corner wide, but while Christian Chaney saw a chance go high inside the final 10 minutes, Republic FC was unable to mount a comeback as the Galaxy saw out the victory to advance to the next round.
