ATLUTD Academy standout joins Charleston for remainder of season

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Wednesday the club had signed United States U20 National Team member Lagos Kunga to a USL contract for the remainder of the 2017 season. Kunga will immediately join the Battery’s Major League Soccer affiliate Atlanta United FC on a short-term loan for Wednesday night’s Round of 16 game in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Miami FC.

Kunga scored 10 goals in 21 appearances for Atlanta United’s U18 Academy team this season. The forward signed a professional contract with Atlanta United earlier this month and will be a Homegrown player as of January 1, 2018.

The Atlanta native played for the Battery in the team’s friendly with the Nigerian Olympic Team at Silverbacks Park last summer. Most recently, Kunga helped the U.S. National Team reach the Quarterfinals of the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup as he scored one goal in four appearances.

Prior to joining the Atlanta United FC Academy, Kunga previously featured in the Super Y League for the DDYSC Wolves, and was one of the standout performers at the 2016 USL Experience hosted by FC Cincinnati.

Kunga and Atlanta United meet Miami FC in the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m ET. The Charleston Battery return to action Saturday, July 1st against Tampa Bay Rowdies at MUSC Health Stadium.
