RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC announced on Thursday that midfielder Junior Burgos had been selected to represent El Salvador at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Burgos has made eight previous appearances for his country. La Selecta will face Mexico (July 9), Curacao (July 13) and Jamaica (July 16) in the tournament’s opening round.

“I think this is a huge opportunity to play at the highest level possible,” Burgos said. “I think this is the biggest regional tournament and it’s exciting. I am really looking forward to representing my country.”

Burgos has appeared previously this year for El Salvador in its preparation games for the tournament. In addition, the 29-year-old has made nine appearances for 1868 FC in its inaugural season in the USL, recording one goals and two assists.

“To be selected to play in an international competition like the CONCACAF Gold Cup is a huge honor and speaks to what type of player and person Junior is,” Reno 1868 FC general manager Andy Smith said. “To play in front of that many fans for your opening match must be an incredible feeling. We’re excited that Junior gets to experience that and we’ll be cheering him on from Reno.”

Burgos is the second Reno player to be named to a major international tournament this summer, with defender Kip Colvey – who has played for 1868 FC on loan from the San Jose Earthquakes this season – currently competing for New Zealand at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.
