Republic FC goalkeeper’s brave stop against Vancouver earns Week 13 honor

TAMPA, Fla. – Sacramento Republic FC goalkeeper Evan Newton has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for the second time this season as his brave denial against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Saturday night claimed the honor for Week 13 of the 2017 season in the weekly online poll.

Newton claimed Save of the Week honors in Week 7 this season, and came up big again this past Saturday with a key stop midway through the first half. With the game level after two early goals, the 2015 USL Goalkeeper of the Year Finalist anticipated well to arrive at the right time to smother WFC2 forward Kyle Greig’s finish as he surged into the penalty area, allowing his defense to clear.

Newton’s save received 65 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. OKC Energy FC goalkeeper C.J. Cochran finished second for his outstanding one-on-one stop against the Portland Timbers 2 last Friday night with 29 percent, while Orlando City B’s Jake Fenlason finished third for his fine save to deny Toronto FC II’s Tsubasa Endoh.
