OTTAWA – Having spent the first 12 weeks of the USL regular season on the sideline with an ankle injury, Ottawa Fury FC’s Carl Haworth has spent little time in re-establishing himself in the team’s lineup.

On Tuesday afternoon in his first start of the 2017 season, the Canadian international produced an impressive hour-long performance, and provided the assist on Steevan Dos Santos’ goal in the 1-0 victory against Orlando City B at TD Place.

“It's amazing to be back,” said Haworth following the game. “It's been 16 weeks coming, to the day I think, I am very excited to be back out there helping the squad and today I wanted to leave everything out on the field. It was a good team performance today.”

Haworth was named Fury FC’s Most Valuable Player in 2016 as he recorded a team-high eight goals and six assists in all competitions. One of the stalwarts from the club’s PDL days as it transitioned to the professional ranks, the 27-year-old also hit the crossbar and created another scoring chance as Ottawa carried the play for much of the first half against OCB.

With Fury FC looking to rebound from Saturday’s defeat against the Rochester Rhinos, Head Coach Paul Dalglish was pleased with what he saw as his side recorded its fourth win in the past six games to move into sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.

“We asked for a response after Rochester’s game and we got it in abundance, so I couldn’t be more pleased with our squad,” said Dalglish. “I’m every bit as proud of the second half as I am of the first half. We had many more chances than them in the first half and defended really well in the second half.”

While Haworth’s presence buoyed the team on the field, the crowd of 7,551 fans at TD Place for the first School Day game in the club’s history also proved a hit with the players.

“They gave us a lot of energy which ultimately helped us get the win,” said Ottawa captain Lance Rozeboom. “It was a fantastic atmosphere and I think it was a great initiative by OSEG. We are happy that we got the win.”
