Rangers, Rising FC aim to build on victories in last outings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Swope Park Rangers and Phoenix Rising FC square off for the second time this season with both teams coming off important wins in their push to reach the postseason in the USL’s Western Conference. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CT.

Swope Park Rangers news and notes

  • Current record: 5-4-1, 16pts

  • The Rangers took a 3-1 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks FC last Sunday evening as a pair of late goals by Mark Anthony Gonzalez gained a valuable three points.

  • Gonzalez’s goals came in the 90th minute from the penalty spot and in stoppage time, and proved a positive ending to his first appearance since an early-season injury.

  • 2016 USL All-League selection Cameron Iwasa scored his first goal for Swope Park to open the scoring. Iwasa was signed by Sporting Kansas City this offseason from Sacramento Republic FC.

  • Gonzalez’s second goal against the Roughnecks was the 60th scored by the Rangers in the USL regular season in the club’s 40th regular season game.

Phoenix Rising FC news and notes

  • Current record: 5-5-0, 15pts

  • Rising FC got a goal and an assist on his debut for the club by former Premier League champion Didier Drogba to lead the side to a 2-1 victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 last Saturday night.

  • Drogba first goal for his new club came off a cross by fellow debutant Amadou Dia, and was voted the Fans’ Choice USL Goal of the Week for Week 12.

  • Rising FC has won only once on the road in four outings this season, a 2-1 win against the LA Galaxy II on May 27.

  • Shaun Wright-Phillips scored the game-winning goal for Phoenix against Vancouver, adding to his game-winner against OKC Energy FC on May 13.

  • Phoenix earned a 4-3 victory when the teams met on April 23, and now leads the series 1-0-1.
