SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Sounders FC 2 announced on Tuesday the club had signed defender Sam Rogers to a professional contract. Rogers, who turned 18 last month, has shined in his first season playing with S2 as a member of Sounders FC Academy. The former captain of the club's U18 squad has made a smooth transition to the professional ranks, playing 1,080 minutes at center back and scoring one goal this season in USL action.

"We are very excited to have Sam join us on a professional contract," said Sounders FC Director of Player Personnel Kurt Schmid. "We're happy to continue his development with S2 on a professional level after being with Sounders FC Academy, and we know exactly the type of player and young man he is. The future is very bright for him in the organization."

Rogers, who is currently wrapping up his senior year at Ballard High School, made his professional debut in the season-opening loss to Sacramento Republic FC on March 26. The Seattle native leads all players under the age of 20 across USL in minutes and clearances this season. He scored his first professional goal in a 3-2 loss against San Antonio FC on April 25.

"Sam has been one of the most consistent players for S2 this season," S2 Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson said of Rogers, who was called into U.S. U18 training camp in March. "He has made a very good transition from defensive midfielder with the U18s to center back at S2. He is a hard worker with a very good frame and quick instincts. We are very confident in his potential to continue to develop with the club."
