CARSON, Calif. – Kevaughn Frater’s 90th-minute winner lifted Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC to a 2-1 victory against the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium. The Galaxy II (2-8-2, 8pts) created the first good chance in the fourth minute as Justin Dhillon forced a near-post save from the left side of the penalty area from Switchbacks goalkeeper Moise Pouaty. Colorado Springs’ Masta Kacher was denied by LA’s Bennett Sneddon midway through the half, but the Galaxy II had the better attacking pressure during the first half overall. The Switchbacks (5-4-5, 20pts) came out more aggressively in the second half, however, and took the lead in the 65th minute when Frater got on the end of a cross from the right by Kacher and nodded home from close range to put the visitors ahead. The Galaxy II hit back with 10 minutes to go as Dhillon beat Pouaty with a curling strike from 20 yards that tucked inside the left post. The Switchbacks grabbed the lead back in the final minute, though, as Frater’s header from Connor Bevans’ cross lifted his side to a second consecutive late win.

Scoring:
65’ – COS – Kevaughn Frater (Masta Kacher)
80’ – LA – Justin Dhillon (Andre Zanga)
90’ – COS – Kevaughn Frater (Connor Bevans)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. For a second consecutive week, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC left it late, but managed to pick up what could be a vital victory when it’s all said and done at the end of the season. After Rony Argueta’s heroics against OKC Energy FC last Saturday night, against the Galaxy II it was Kevaughn Frater who made the difference as his second goal of the night proved decisive. Colorado Springs has now moved into third place in the Western Conference standings, and while those below it have games in hand, getting those points in the pocket will be very satisfying for Head Coach Steve Trittschuh.

  • 2. Frater’s two goals were a reward for another industrious performance up front for the Switchbacks, and the Jamaican now has three goals this season after suffering from some poor luck earlier in the year. The Switchbacks have run hot and cold in front of goal at times this season so far, but now five different players on the squad have multiple goals. After another dramatic win, the Switchbacks will be hoping Frater’s brace is a sign of more to come.

  • 3. The Galaxy II continued to struggle this season, but the play of Justin Dhillon has been a major bright spot for the side since his arrival with the squad. Dhillon threatened regularly over the course of the contest, and his finish with 10 minutes to go appeared to have earned a point for the hosts. Frater’s goal meant that wouldn’t be the case, but with six shots on the night, four of which were on target, and two chances created, Dhillon is proving a live wire for Los Dos.
