CHARLESTON, S.C. – After an arduous road trip that took the Charleston Battery first through the northeast, and the slightly south to Jacksonville, Fla. for a successful Third Round tie in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, it might not have been a surprise to see the Charleston Battery run out of gas a little late on against Louisville City FC last Saturday night.

After remaining at the top of the Eastern Conference standings following a 4-4 draw against their fellow contenders, though, Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser said he believed the game had a galvanizing effect on the side.

“I think the guys have jelled,” Anhaeuser said this week. “I’m sure it brought the guys together because it was such a great game, and any time you have that you really get some excitement. The good thing is we’re really firing on all cylinders, and that’s very important going into the summer.”

Romario Williams’ ninth and 10th goals of the season were among the highlights for the Battery against Louisville, moving the 22-year-old Jamaican level with his goal total with Charleston last season. With the added chemistry a season alongside the likes of Ataulla Guerra, Justin Portillo and Maikel Chang has brought, Williams has come into his own fully, earning a call-up to the Jamaica National Team for the country’s international exhibition with Peru next Tuesday.

“I’m feeling good,” said Williams. “I’m in a good run of form right now and my teammates have been doing a great job of getting me into good positions, and all I have to do is finish the chances whenever they come my way. I’ve been doing that well so far this season, hopefully I can keep going.”

Williams won’t be headed to join the Reggae Boyz until after Saturday’s game against the Battery’s longtime rival the Richmond Kickers, though. The first meeting of both clubs’ 25th anniversary seasons is the 60th meeting all-time between the teams. With a full week to prepare ahead of the contest, Anhaeuser believes his side will be ready to return to the win column and maintain its lead in the Eastern Conference for another week.

“You could see it today, our first day of training, it rained a little bit, and the guys were buzzing,” said Anhaeuser. “They had a lot of energy, they had a lot of excitement in their belly. Hopefully that lets us refresh and have those legs so that if we come down to the end, we’re able to push forward.”
