OKLAHOMA CITY – Yet to score in the USL this season, Tuesday night’s USL Game of the Week provided a big stage for OKC Energy FC’s Wojciech Wojcik.

But after his two goals had propelled the hosts to a 3-2 victory against Phoenix Rising FC at Taft Stadium, a late elbow injury left cause for concern ahead of another big game against San Antonio FC on Saturday night. Coming after a breakout performance,

“He was tough to handle the entire night,” said Energy FC midfielder Kyle Hyland. “I thought he had a great reaction on the second one. It was great ball in and great finish on the first one. But, no, I mean, he worked hard and he gives us that nice presence up top, so he’s able to hold the ball for us and let everyone in the attacking zone.”

Wojcik had opened his account for the season last Wednesday night in Energy FC’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup victory against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Against Phoenix, he provided a big boost late in stoppage time in the first half as a powerful header found the right corner of the net from an excellent cross by Michael Harris from the right.

Phoenix notched an equalizer just two minutes into the second half through J.J. Greer, but OKC got back on top again soon after as Hyland fired home Daniel Jackson’s cross from the right in the 56th minute. Wojcik then struck again with 20 minutes to go, putting home the rebound of Jackson’s shot from the right side of the penalty area, and almost bagged a hat trick after a clever run put him in behind Rising FC’s defense, only to send Miguel Gonzalez’s chipped pass over the bar.

“He’s been very, very good, lately, for us,” said Energy FC Head Coach Jimmy Nielsen. “He’s a handful to deal with for the opponents. He had played very well – might have been [lacking in scoring] goals. Today he played good and scored two really good goals. It might have looked easy, but there are no easy goals.”

With three minutes to go, however, the 6-foot-4 striker’s night ended on a sour note as a challenge for position saw him land awkwardly. Substituted, the bandaging that wrapped his left arm was visible as he celebrated with supporters following the game.

With Wojcik returning to form, his absence from Saturday’s game would be a major blow against a San Antonio side that holds a six-game shutout streak in league play as it enters Taft Stadium. It could signal the chance for a first league start for Andy Craven, acquired almost a month ago from FC Cincinnati for Danni König.

With wins at a premium as Energy FC looks to push its way up the Western Conference, though, the team knows getting another three points – with or without Wojcik – is a must.

“We know we needed this to bounce back after the tough loss in Colorado – you can hear us in [the locker room],” said Gonzalez. “We’re motivated, ready for the next game. We know it’s not going to be easy, but we’re ready. We’re ready for it.”
