TAMPA, Fla. – Charlotte Independence goalkeeper Cody Mizell has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Month for May of the 2017 season, with the 24-year-old crucial save in the Independence’s 3-1 victory against Orlando City B earning the monthly award.
Mizell and the Independence were already trailing 1-0 against OCB on May 27 when Orlando threatened to add a second. Danny Deakin’s fierce shot to the right corner of the net sent Mizell at full stretch, but the goalkeeper got a hand to the effort to turn it aside. Charlotte proceeded to rally, and earned a big 3-1 victory on the road.
Mizell’s save received 37 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday morning. Louisville City FC’s Tim Dobrowolski took second with 29 percent for his double save against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, while Bethlehem Steel FC’s Jake McGuire finished third for his reflex stop to deny FC Cincinnati’s Jimmy McLaughlin, which took 26 percent.
