Independence goalkeeper’s save helped earn victory against Orlando

TAMPA, Fla. – Charlotte Independence goalkeeper Cody Mizell has claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 10 of the 2017 season, with his fingertip save against Orlando City B taking honors in the weekly online poll.

Already trailing by a goal on the road last Saturday night, Mizell went at full stretch to turn a shot by Orlando’s Danny Deakin wide of the left post midway through the first half. The save proved key, as the Independence rallied back to earn a 3-1 victory on the road to move closer to the playoff positions in the Eastern Conference.

Mizell’s save received 82 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Saint Louis FC’s Adam Grinwis took second with 16 percent for his fingertip save to deny the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Joe Cole at Al Lang Stadium last Saturday, while the Portland Timbers 2’s Wade Hamilton’s scrambling save to deny Tulsa Roughnecks FC’s Ian Svantesson finished third.
