OKLAHOMA CITY – OKC Energy FC’s Daniel Gonzalez and Mickey Daly notched their first goals of the season to lead the host side to a 2-1 victory against the Portland Timbers 2 on Wednesday at Taft Stadium. Miguel Gonzalez assisted the winner by Daly in the 75th minute and also provided the buildup that led to Daniel Gonzalez’s finish. The Timbers 2, who created a number of chances, finally ended their scoreless drought at 351 minutes. Victor Arboleda’s second-half equalizer provided a strong response five minutes after Daniel Gonzalez’s goal, but Portland’s tough-luck campaign continued as the club moved to 1-8-1 (4 points) overall and 1-4-0 on the road. Energy FC improved to 3-4-1 (10 points) overall and 3-1-0 at home.

Scoring:
54’ – OKC – Daniel Gonzalez
59’ – POR – Victor Arboleda (Augustine Williams)
75’ – OKC – Mickey Daly (Miguel Gonzalez)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. In the spirit of National Brothers Day, the Gonzalez brothers teamed up to get Energy FC on the score sheet early in the second half. Miguel Gonzalez rushed to claim the ball just before the end line and crossed from the right side into a dangerous spot in the middle of the box. Alex Dixon fired and T2 goalkeeper Wade Hamilton stuffed his attempt. However, the rebound popped out to Daniel Gonzalez who slotted his shot past a defender and Hamilton’s leg and inside the near left post for a 1-0 advantage. Miguel Gonzalez would then notch an assist for Mickey Daly to take a 2-1 lead. Gonzalez’s right-footed cross from the left flank connected perfectly with Daly, who headed it home in the 75th minute.

  • 2. T2 notched its first goal since Victor Arboleda’s second-half strike during a 2-0 win at Sacramento Republic FC on April 22. It was Arboleda who broke the 351-minute scoring drought with a right-footed finish inside the far right post in the 59rth minute to tie the score at 1-1. Defender Kyle Bjornethun led the charge with the interception in the midfield. Portland pushed down the left side and Arboleda patiently waited for the right moment to place his shot past Energy FC goalkeeper Cody Laurendi and into the right of the frame.

  • 3. Overall, Portland had the clear-cut edge in scoring chances over OKC. T2 had a number of prime chances to claim the first score of the match. In the 16th minute, Omar Mohamed kicked the ball in from a tough angle on the right side of the box and it ricocheted off of the left post and caromed right to Laurendi. In the 41st minute, Arboleda shot at the near right post and Laurendi came up with the reaction save to keep things scoreless heading into halftime.
