Rhinos deep-lying playmaker could pose challenge for Rowdies

Wednesday night’s USL Game of the Week on ESPN3 includes a number of the league’s high-profile players, with the Tampa Bay Rowdies being led into Capelli Sport Stadium by the likes of Joe Cole, Marcel Schäfer and Georgi Hristov as they look to move clear at the top of the Eastern Conference (7:05 p.m. ET | Preview).

For the hosts, though, there is Kenardo Forbes, who may be one of the more overlooked of the league’s top players over the past two seasons. His numbers certainly aren’t as eye-popping as some. He has only eight goals and 10 assists in 63 regular-season games for the Rhinos, and two of those goals came in Rochester’s last two games. But it’s what Forbes does to get others into good situations that has made him so valuable.

In Rochester’s biggest win of the season against the Charlotte Independence, Forbes’ ability to set up chance creation opportunities for his teammates was on clear display. Look at those long diagonal passes into the corners, which picked out Christiano Francois on the right and Mike Garzi on the left. Francois was a big beneficiary, finishing the game with two assists and another chance created as he was able to get in behind the Independence’s defense to cause havoc.

Do those passes come off every time? Of course not, but Forbes’ feel for them is certainly above average in the USL. He’s completed 71 percent of the long passes he’s made this season, and 72 percent of his passes in the opposition half, both impressive numbers.

Forbes earned some respect at the end of last season, claiming All-League Second Team honors as voted on by league management and national media. The work that he has done this season as a deep-lying midfielder has been key to the team finding success. Tampa Bay’s fullbacks on Wednesday night, likely Darnell King and Luke Boden, will have to be vigilant if the likes of Justin Chavez can’t close down Forbes’ time and space to operate.

RENO'S ROAD LEADS THROUGH KELLY

With hat tricks in each of his past two games – something never previously accomplished in the USL – it’s good to be Reno 1868 FC’s Dane Kelly right now. And given the manner 1868 FC is churning out chances for the USL’s all-time leading goal-scorer, it wouldn’t be a big surprise if this run of form continues a little longer.

While Kelly has scored six of the 10 goals Reno has put away in its past two outings – and first two wins in club history – the balance of players those chances have arrived through could give opponents headaches in one-on-one matchups moving forward. Against Seattle this past Saturday, 12 different players recorded either an assist or created a scoring chance for Reno as 1868 FC recorded a 91.6 passing accuracy rate against an S2 side that was never at the races.

That all six of Reno’s goals against Seattle – including both of Kelly’s penalty kicks – came from inside the penalty area shouldn’t come as a surprise, either. Kelly’s opening goal against Phoenix Rising FC two weeks ago is the only tally for Reno this season that has come from outside the area, with 1868 FC looking to get chances centrally in the box for its forwards to put away.

On Wednesday night Reno will look for a third consecutive victory against a Tulsa Roughnecks FC side that has also shown major attacking flair this season as it comes into Greater Nevada Field (10:30 p.m. ET | Preview). With Juan Pablo Caffa, Joey Calistri and Ian Svantesson providing a strong attacking triumvirate for the Roughnecks, the nightcap to a five-game slate on Wednesday should provide a highly entertaining contest.
