Toros midfielder narrowly edges out Wright-Phillips to earn honors for Week 8

TAMPA, Fla. – Rio Grande Valley FC’s Todd Wharton claimed the smallest margin of victory since the inception of the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week to claim the honor for Week 8, as his game-winning goal against the Swope Park Rangers edged out Phoenix Rising FC’s Shaun Wright-Phillips by less than a percentage point in the online poll.

Wharton earned 33.9 percent of the vote for his first goal of the season, which arrived after a tremendous piece of skill by Eric Bird off a throw-in from the right. Bird’s control and back-heel flick found Wharton as he broke into the penalty area, and the former Portland Timbers U-23s midfielder rifled his shot into the top-right corner of the net.

Wright-Phillips’ goal, which also proved the game-winner against OKC Energy FC, 33.7 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Tulsa Roughnecks FC’s Juan Pablo Caffa took third with 13 percent for his picture-perfect free kick against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in the Roughnecks’ 3-1 win last Thursday night.
