TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa Roughnecks FC scored five consecutive goals, including two apiece from Cristian Mata and Pasha Kondrakhin, and then needed almost all of them as they fought off a second-half comeback by the Premier Development League’s OKC Energy FC U23 for a 5-3 victory in the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.

The Roughnecks will now play host to fellow USL club San Antonio FC in the Third Round on May 31.

The Roughnecks earned the lead in just the eighth minute as Jaime Ayala put away across by Joey Calistri. Ayala had a role in Tulsa’s second goal as well five minutes later as his long-distance shot was parried by the Energy FC U23 goalkeeper, only for Mata to tuck home the rebound from close range.

Tulsa added to its lead just before the halftime break as Kondrakhin worked a give-and-go with Mata just inside the right edge of the penalty area, and Kondrakhin put home a first-time finish to the near-post for a 3-0 lead.

Mata added his second of the night four minutes into the second half as he claimed a through-ball by Collin Fernandez under pressure from a defender, and then dinked his finish over the advancing goalkeeper. Kondrakhin then scored in the 53rd minute as the Roughnecks’ high pressure won possession in OKC’s half, and came to the forward 20 yards out for a curled finish to the right corner.

At that point everything seemed under control for the hosts, but Energy FC U23 pulled a goal back before the hour-mark as Mark Lindstrom scored from a corner kick. The Roughnecks’ Paris Gee then recorded an own goal in the 64th minute to make it 5-2, and when Christian Okeke made it a two-goal game with 17 minutes to go the Roughnecks’ nerves could have started to jangle.

Tulsa was able to see the game out over the final 10 minutes, however, advancing to the Third Round in two weeks.
