CINCINNATI – FC Cincinnati announced on Monday the club had signed defender Josué Currais Prieto to a one-year contract to bolster its squad for the current season. Prieto previously competed in the USL for Wilmington Hammerheads FC, and is a former member of FC Barcelona’s Academy.

“Josu adds to our group, a quality left-footed player who can play in a variety of positions,” said FC Cincinnati Head Coach Alan Koch. “He is an attack-minded left back, but can also play further up the field if needed. He has had some great experiences in Spain and India, and will be a young player who will be able to come in and compete to start immediately within our group. We are excited to add him to the team and integrate him in with his new teammates.”

Known professionally as “Josu”, the 5-foot-6 fullback is expected to arrive in Cincinnati next week. He honed his talent at La Masia, where he helped FC Barcelona to three championships at the U16, U17 and U18 levels. Earning a cap with Spain’s Youth National Team, Josu left La Masia Academy to join crosstown rival Espanyol in 2011.

A native of Girona, Prieto moved on to play with Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho (SJK) in Finland in 2013-14. In his rookie season, he had nine goals in 25 appearances.

Following his two-year tenure with SJK, he signed on briefly with Gornik Leczna in Poland, playing in eight matches before joining Kerala Blasters of the Indian Super League in 2015-16, where he helped the team to the league final.
