One-on-one denial of San Antonio’s Castillo claimed weekly honor

TAMPA, Fla. – Sacramento Republic FC goalkeeper Evan Newton has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 7 of the 2017 season, as his one-on-one save to deny San Antonio FC’s Rafael Castillo on Saturday night at Toyota Field earned the weekly honor.

A finalist for USL Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015, Newton has been strong since arriving in Sacramento last season. On Saturday he again showed off his excellent reflexes, getting down well to save from the Colombian playmaker in one of the biggest chances as the two top Western Conference clubs met for the first time this season.

Newton’s save received 56 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Reno 1868 FC’s Matt Bersano took second with 36 percent for his save on a good free kick by Phoenix’s Chris Cortez to help preserve the first shutout in 1868 FC history, while the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Matt Pickens finished third with 13 percent as he preserved a shutout late with a low diving save against Ottawa Fury FC.
