EDMONTON, Alberta – Ottawa Fury FC advanced to the Semifinals of the 2017 Canadian Championship after it earned a 3-2 victory against FC Edmonton at Clarke Stadium in Wednesday night’s second leg of the Preliminary Round to go through 4-2 on aggregate. Sito Seoane and Steevan Dos Santos both found the net for Fury FC, which will take on Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC in the next round.

Fury FC took the lead just 39 seconds in – setting a club record – as a giveaway in the defensive end by Edmonton’s Allan Zebie allowed Sito Seoane to break in alone on goal, and he finished low into the left corner for a crucial away goal, and a 2-0 advantage over the two legs.

Ottawa almost doubled its lead within the opening 10 minutes as Seoane drove in from the left, passed a defender and ripped an effort from 20 yards that came back off the crossbar. The rebound came to Steevan Dos Santos, but he was unable to control his finish as it flew high. Ryan Williams also went close in the 14th minute with a curling free kick to the left corner that was saved by Edmonton goalkeeper Tyson Farago.

Edmonton’s first good chance came in the 26th minute when a low ball came through the Ottawa penalty area and came to Dustin Corea, but his first-time finish skied over the crossbar. Fury FC’s Eddie Edward also went close moments later after he turned the corner on his marker at the top of the penalty area, but his shot went wide of the left post.

Edmonton tied the game on the night when Callum Irving was unaware of Jake Keegan’s presence behind him in the penalty area as he went to clear off the ground on the half-hour mark. Keegan stole the ball and rounded Irving to cut FCE’s deficit on aggregate to one.

Fury FC restored its two-goal advantage on aggregate seven minutes later, however, as the visitors were awarded a penalty kick for a handball in the area. Dos Santos stepped up and buried his shot low into the left corner beyond Farago’s outstretched hand.

Edmonton came out with more pressure to start the second half, and Sainey Nyassi leveled the score on the night again in the 61st minute when he was slipped into the right side of the penalty area and finished past Irving. The Eddies were reduced to 10 men six minutes later, however, when Abdoulaye Diakité was sent off for bringing down Jamar Dixon on the edge of the area as the midfielder tried to break in on goal.

The hosts continued to press forward in attack despite being down a man, though, and Irving had to make a good save with 11 minutes to go as Keegan headed toward the right corner of the net. Ottawa put the game away in stoppage time as Dos Santos notched his second of the night to give Fury FC the lead on the night, and a place in the semifinals for a second consecutive season.
