PITTSBURGH – Victor Souto’s normal job for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds is act as the conduit between the team’s defense and attack, and with a league-high 460 passes and 76.5 accuracy rate it’s a duty he performs well.

On Wednesday night in the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3, though, the Brazilian rookie brought sometime else – a keen eye for goal. His long-range strike to the top-right corner not only earned the Hounds a 1-0 victory against Toronto FC II, but also landed him at the No. 2 spot on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10.

“For me my main job is to go back and pass to the guys in front of me,” said Souto after the game. “Today, I just felt something different and I was going to hit this one. I was lucky to just score the goal.”

Souto’s goal continued a remarkable string of finishes on the USL Game of the Week so far this season. The opening game of the national slate saw OKC Energy FC’s Miguel Gonzalez tally a standout bicycle kick that landed him the No. 1 spot on the SC Top 10, while the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Marcel Schäfer earned the No. 2 position for his long-range blast against FC Cincinnati.

As importantly for the Riverhounds, though, Souto’s goal earned the club its first back-to-back victories since August, 2015 and pushed the side into the top four in the USL’s Eastern Conference. With a quarter of their season complete, Pittsburgh will now aim to continue its upward trajectory as it seeks a return to the postseason after a disappointing 2016.

“We were just trying to make sure we got away with three [points],” said Riverhounds Head Coach Dave Brandt. “The number of times that the shoe has been on the other foot and we’ve played well and not come away with points certainty outweighs this situation.”

For Souto, though, his first professional goal was definitely a special one for him, and his family.

“My whole family is back in Brazil,” said Souto. “For me, every performance I have is for them. They cannot be here to watch me play, and I know they were watching online.”
