SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC’s three-game trip through the Pacific Northwest was always going to be a test of the Western Conference leader’s depth, but Head Coach Darren Powell navigated the trip in perfect fashion as the side returned to Texas with three wins out of three.

Powell’s rotation saw 20 different players feature across the three starting lineups, as players like Devin Vega, Ryan Roushandel and Aly Hassan made their first starts of the season. That rotation allowed SAFC to remain fresh, while also picking up valuable points for the road ahead.

“Every point in the league is very valuable, and we know we have to really work hard for those points,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell on Tuesday. “To earn them on the road is good. We talk about how we want to attack, how we want to defend, and it’s a collective.”

Only three players have now started in every game this season for SAFC, which is currently on a club-record four-game winning streak and seven game undefeated run to start the season. Among the trio is defender Greg Cochrane, who along with Sebastian Ibeagha played all 270 minutes of the trip.

“We knew it was going to be a tough week, on short rest each game, so the fact that we came away with maximum points is pretty special,” said Cochrane. “If you had said we’d have got seven points out of that week going into it, we’d have taken it.”

Cochrane’s consistency at fullback has made him one of the staples in SAFC’s lineup since the club began at the start of last season. The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes in 28 of his 30 appearances a season ago for the club, and is on pace for a similar season this year having yet to miss a minute of action.

While Cochrane and Ibeagha have helped marshal a defense that has conceded only four goals this season, the attacking duo of Billy Forbes and Cesar Elizondo currently sit with the most goals of any duo in the league. Forbes sits tied for the league-lead with six goals, while USL Week 6 Player of the Week Elizondo has four as SAFC leads the league with 18 goals.

“During the whole trip we worked together, and we had that in mind,” Elizondo said of keeping the club’s undefeated start going. “I think it was a good thing from the time we took the plane we were thinking on it, but we knew it was going to be hard. We put a lot of work into it, and in the games we were focused and trying to do as the coach said, and everything came up.”

SAFC’s undefeated record will get tested again this Saturday as it returns to Toyota Field to play host to Sacramento Republic FC. With the squad fully tested during its travels, Powell’s focus is trained on maintaining the standard that was set in Cascadia.

“I think what’s been the strength of this group is their collective defending, and we have to continue to do that, because that’s hard work,” Powell said. “To a man last week, everyone was fresh and it was really a squad effort, and that’s what’s most pleasing and most satisfying about the trip.”
