ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rowdies got a spectacular finish by Deshorn Brown to earn a 1-0 victory against the Richmond Kickers  on Saturday night at Al Lang Stadium to break a three-game winless streak. Tampa Bay had the first good chance as Marcel Schäfer picked out Brown in the penalty area, but the Jamaican forward’s shot was blocked. The Rowdies continued to have the better of the play, and in the final minute of the half they were rewarded with a side-volleyed finish from 10 yards by Brown that put the hosts up 1-0. The Rowdies looked to add to their lead in the second half, and Darwin Jones had an effort saved by Kickers goalkeeper Matt Turner just past the hour-mark. Schäfer and Brown also went close in the final 20 minutes, both players missing the target with their efforts, but the Kickers were unable to find many serious threats in the final third the hosts were able to close out the victory.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. After a dispiriting defeat against the Charleston Battery a week ago, the Rowdies put in a professional display to get back on a winning track after going three games without a win over the past two weeks. Tampa Bay has now won four of its five home games to start the season, with all four wins seeing the side record a shutout, to move right back into the conversation for top spot in the Eastern Conference.

  • 2. The Kickers knew they would have to be effective on the counter-attack going up against a side that has dominated possession in its home contests so far this season. There were glimmers where the Kickers had chances to break, too, but the side was unable to either find the right connection, or get enough numbers forward in support quickly enough, to produce the type of chances that could have produced a result. Richmond will return home to host Cincinnati next week hoping for improvement in its sharpness.

  • 3. Deshorn Brown was among a number of high-profile additions made by the Rowdies this offseason, and he highlighted why he was so highly thought of with a spectacular finish that provided the winning goal for Tampa Bay on Saturday night. Brown’s perfect technique on his side-volleyed finish sits side-by-side with Marcel Schäfer’s recent finish against FC Cincinnati, and was a fitting finish to get the Rowdies’ back on track ahead of their trip north of the border next weekend.
