Battery look to retain top spot in East as Fury FC visits

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery will try to maintain their position at the top  of the USL Eastern Conference when they meet Ottawa Fury FC for the first time on Saturday night at MUSC Health Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charleston Battery news and notes

  • Current record: 4-1-0, 12pts

  • The Battery took their fourth win of the season last Saturday night with a dramatic 3-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium.

  • Charleston had rallied to take a 2-1 halftime lead on goals by Forrest Lasso and Maikel Chang, but the visitors needed a late winner by Tah Brian Anunga after the Rowdies had equalized in the second half.

  • Lasso’s goal was his third of the season, with all three having been assisted by Justin Portillo, who sits tied for the league-lead with four assists this season.

  • The Battery’s 13 goals are the most in the Eastern Conference, with four players having notched at least two goals so far this season.

Ottawa Fury FC news and notes

  • Current record: 1-2-1, 4pts

  • Fury FC recorded a second consecutive shutout, but was unable to find victory in a 0-0 draw against Toronto FC II in its home opener last Saturday in front of 6,502 fans at TD Place.

  • Ottawa had the better of the game and was awarded a late penalty kick, but Gerardo Bruna’s finish rang off the left post and was cleared, leaving the game scoreless.

  • Ramon Martin Del Campo has been a strong addition to the back line this season, having recorded 16 clearances in four games, double the second-place player on the team.

  • Saturday’s game kicks off a busy week for Ottawa, which hosts FC Edmonton in the Canadian Championship next Wednesday before a visit by the Tampa Bay Rowdies to TD Place on May 6.
