ROCHESTER, N.Y. – It didn’t seem like much of a chance, really.

Awarded a free kick in the center circle deep into stoppage time, there was little angle for the Rochester Rhinos’ Kenardo Forbes to work with as his side looked for an equalizer against defending USL Cup champion the New York Red Bulls II.

But the Jamaican’s floated delivery into the top of the penalty area pair off perfectly as Joe Farrell was the first to the ball, and sent his header past advancing New York Red Bulls II goalkeeper Evan Louro to grab a 2-2 draw with the final play of the game at Capelli Sport Stadium.

“Kenny was playing a couple of really good balls in,” said Farrell. “I heard the goalkeeper put a shout on it, and I just wanted to beat him there. I beat him to it and then I just put it in the net. Not much to it.”

Farrell’s goal salvaged a point for the Rhinos after what had been a disappointing overall performance which put the Red Bulls II on the verge of their first regular-season win against the 2015 USL Cup champion. New York’s go-ahead goal midway through the second half was symbolic of the issues, as Rhinos goalkeeper Tomas Gomez and defender Ryan Felix collided going for the same cross, allowing Vincent Bezecourt to knock home the loose ball.

“There were glaring mistakes on the goals, but teams are playing through us,” said Rhinos Head Coach Bob Lilley. “I just don't think the energy is there to defend. We're getting pushed around. For me, defending is a team mindset and we've got to get better. We're too easy to play against.”

Farrell agreed, but at the same time the 2016 USL All-League selection was glad the side had been able to send the fans home on a high note. With the club getting second for a second consecutive playoff rematch against the Charlotte Independence next Saturday at Capelli Sport Stadium, the work to get the Rhinos back among the contenders in the Eastern Conference continues.

“For the team it was a good to get that point back,” said Farrell. “It’s still not where we need to be. We wanted three points and we only got one. We have to put in a lot of work coming up next week, we’ve got another game at home next weekend.”
