CINCINNATI – Aodhan Quinn scored the equalizer against his former club as a crowd of 20,437 fans saw FC Cincinnati and Louisville City FC play to a 1-1 draw at Nippert Stadium in the River Cities Cup on Saturday night. The game opened evenly, but Louisville grabbed the lead in the 20th minute when Brian Ownby scored his first goal for the club with a pin-point turn past his marker and finish that caromed in off the left post from 25 yards out. Cincinati almost equalized five minutes before halftime, but Matt Bahner’s first-time shot from 30 yards was tipped over by Louisville goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski. The hosts also went close just past the hour-mark as Austin Berry’s flicked header from a corner kick was headed off the line by Louisville’s Niall McCabe at the back post. With Cincinnati pressing for an equalizer, Louisville looked to hit on the break, and FCC goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt made a good save to deny George Davis IV. Set pieces continued to provide big opportunities for FCC as Corben Bone was denied by a good block at close range off a free kick, but Quinn's turning strike after the ball fell to him on a loose play from 10 yards with 11 minutes ended up pulling the hosts level. Cincinnati was reduced to 10 men with five minutes to go when USL leading scorer Djiby Fall was sent off for a dangerous challenge, but Louisville was unable to take advantage of its late man-advantage as honors ended even.

Scoring:
20’ – LOU – Brian Ownby (Kyle Smith)
79’ – CIN – Aodhan Quinn

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Brian Ownby has been a dangerous piece for Louisville since the start of his first season with the club, and his first goal for City was one befitting of the talent he’s shown consistently in the USL during his career. A brilliant turn to create space and a path to goal, and a precise finish to the far post that left FCC goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt little chance was a perfect opener for Ownby at his new club, and got the game off to an excellent start as the early energy was carried forward throughout the first half.
  • 2. The role Aodhan Quinn would play in his first goal against the side he had captained was always going to be under the spotlight on Saturday night, and that Quinn provided the equalizer for the hosts was the sort of thing that happens much more frequently than for it to be just chance. Quinn had a good game overall, completing 84 percent of his passes and providing dangerous deliveries that almost delivered FCC’s equalizer before he finally notched it himself – Austin Berry’s header that was cleared off the line the clearest example. With FCC set to visit Louisville for the first time on July 15, Chapter 2 of this season’s rivalry promises a lot to look forward to.
  • 3. The rivalry between Cincinnati and Louisville has been one of the marquee matchups in the USL since its arrival last season, and the drive and determination on the field was only matched by the atmosphere generated in the stands by the host and visiting support. With another strong travelling group from Louisville making the trip, the energy in the stands filled with more than 20,000 fans seemed to keep the players from both clubs at heightened levels of awareness in another tremendously contested clash.
