VANCOUVER – San Antonio FC opened up its three-game trip the Pacific Northwest on a high note, posting a 2-1 victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium. Billy Forbes scored a go-ahead goal in the 46th minute and set up Aly Hassan’s 22nd-minute score for SAFC. Sandwiched in between, Vancouver’s Marco Bustos scored in the final moments of the first half to find the score sheet on his 21st birthday. San Antonio goalkeepers Matt Cardone and Diego Restrepo combined for the victory as Cardone departed the match about 10 minutes into the second half. San Antonio improved to 4-0-1 (13 points) overall and 2-0-0 on the road. Vancouver fell to 2-2-1 (7 points) and lost for the first time at home this season. SAFC is 2-0-0 all-time against Vancouver.

Scoring:
22’ – SA – Aly Hassan (Billy Forbes)
45’ – VAN – Marco Bustos
46’ – SA – Billy Forbes

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. San Antonio’s Aly Hassan, who made his first start of the season, rewarded Head Coach Darren Powell and his side with a first-half tally and his first goal of the campaign. Heading into Saturday, Hassan had come off the bench in two matches, logging a combined 11 minutes. Hassan upped his stock a little bit with a clinical finish in the 22nd minute. It was the buildup, though, that was played to perfection, and Billy Forbes has been a true constant in SAFC’s attack. Forbes’ left-footed cross eluded Vancouver’s final defender and Hassan stuck his foot out and went top-shelf for the one-goal lead. Forbes has three assists on the season.

  • 2. Forbes now has four goals on the season following his tally in the opening minute of the second half. San Antonio was aggressive after the halftime whistle, playing a deep ball from the defensive third toward Vancouver’s end. WFC2 was not equal to the task. Vancouver could not get a clean deflection and Forbes pounced at the chance, heading the ball into the right side of the frame for a 2-1 lead.

  • 3. Vancouver looked like it was heading into the halftime break down a goal as SAFC was the more dominant side. WFC2 found some life, though, with Ben McKendry’s strike ricocheting off of the left post. The ball bounced to Bustos in his first appearance of the season. His rebound went off of SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone but still found its way into the back of the net to level the score.
