Last two USL Cup champions meet in Rhinos’ 22nd home opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The last two USL Cup champions will meet on Saturday evening when the Rochester Rhinos host the New York Red Bulls II for their 22nd home opener in club history, and a rematch from the past two Eastern Conference Playoffs. Kickoff at Capelli Sport Stadium is set for 6:05 p.m. ET.

Rochester Rhinos news and notes

  • Current record: 1-1-1, 4pts

  • The Rhinos suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday night in Charleston as the Battery took a 5-0 win at MUSC Health Stadium behind a hat trick from Romario Williams.

  • Rochester has won five of its six home openers since 2011, including a 2-0 victory against the Red Bulls II in 2015 that was part of a 19-game undefeated start to the season.

  • Rhinos midfielder Kenardo Forbes sits just outside the USL Top 10 in chances created this season with eight. The Jamaican has recorded six goals and nine assists over the past two regular seasons.

  • The Rhinos announced this week they had signed former Sewanee College standout Samuel Edoung-Biyo, who enters his first professional season this year.

New York Red Bulls II news and notes

  • Current record: 2-2-1, 7pts

  • The Red Bulls II snapped a two-game losing streak last Friday night as Vincent Bezecourt had a goal and two assists in a 3-1 victory against Orlando City B.

  • Bezecourt earned his third USL Team of the Week selection of the season for the performance, and is now tied for second in the USL with four goals.

  • New York rookie Arun Basuljevic leads the USL with 318 attempted passes so far this season, with the former PDL standout having played every minute of the season, and completing his passes at an 81.1 percent clip.

  • The Red Bulls II rank third in the USL with 63 shots, and also sit tied for third with nine goals this season in four games.

  • The Red Bulls II advanced in a penalty shootout in the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs against the Rhinos, but have still yet to defeat Rochester in regulation with the Rhinos holding a 3-0-5 record in regular-season and postseason contests.
