Vancouver looks to build on two-game winning streak as San Antonio visits

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 will look to add to its two-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon, but will face a strong challenge from a San Antonio FC side that is undefeated in four games to start the new USL season. Kickoff at Thunderbird Stadium is set for 3 p.m. PT.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 news and notes

  • Current record: 2-1-1, 7pts

  • Vancouver earned a late 1-0 victory against the Portland Timbers 2 last Sunday as Thomas Sanner’s goal with four minutes to go proved decisive at Providence Park.

  • Goalkeeper Sean Melvin recorded a stellar five-save shutout in the victory, and was named to the USL Team of the Week on Tuesday for his performance.

  • Saturday’s game is WFC2’s first this season at Thunderbird Stadium, with the club having previously hosted its home opener at McLeod Athletic Park when it defeated Seattle 3-0 on April 8.

  • WFC2 defender Michael Baldisimo was named in Canada’s U17 National Team squad for the 2017 CONCACAF U17 Championship that kicks off on Friday in Panama.

San Antonio FC news and notes

  • Current record: 3-0-1, 10pts

  • San Antonio moved top of the Western Conference with a 4-0 victory against Reno 1868 FC last Saturday night in front of 6,403 fans at Toyota Field.

  • Cesar Elizondo had a pair of goals, while Billy Forbes had a goal and assist and goalkeeper Matt Cardone had a five-save shutout to get the side back in the win column.

  • Cardone has conceded only one goal so far this season, and is tied for the league-lead with three shutouts. SAFC’s +8 goal differential is currently the best in the USL.

  • Saturday’s game kicks off a three-game trip through Cascadia for SAFC, with visits to Seattle Sounders FC 2 (Tuesday) and the Portland Timbers 2 (Friday) also on the docket.

  • San Antonio took a 2-0 victory in the lone clash between the sides last season. This is SAFC’s first trip to Vancouver.
