Battery, Rhinos square off for first time in new season

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery and Rochester Rhinos will renew their longstanding rivalry on Saturday night with both teams looking to get back on a winning track. Kickoff at MUSC Health Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charleston Battery news and notes

  • Current record: 2-1-0, 6pts

  • The Battery fell for the first time this season last Saturday night when the Pittsburgh Riverhounds rallied for a 2-1 victory at MUSC Health Stadium.

  • Ataulla Guerra opened the scoring for the Battery in just the eighth minute, but second-half goals by Marshall Hollingsworth and Corey Hertzog lifted the Riverhounds to victory.

  • Charleston goalkeeper Alex Tambakis claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week on Thursday for his low reflex stop that denied Pittsburgh’s Kevin Kerr.

  • The Battery will have O’Brian Woodbine available for selection for the first time this season after the completion of his three-game suspension that carried over from the end of the 2016 season.

Rochester Rhinos news and notes

  • Current record: 1-0-1, 4pts

  • The Rhinos remained undefeated this season with a 0-0 draw against Toronto FC II last Friday night at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

  • Goalkeeper Tomas Gomez – the 2016 USL Golden Glove winner – recorded three saves in the contest to earn his first shutout of the season.

  • Jamaican playmaker Kenardo Forbes has created seven scoring chances in the Rhinos’ first two games of the season. Forbes was selected to the USL All-League Second Team a season ago.

  • Saturday’s game completed a three-game road trip for the Rhinos, who will make their 2017 debut at Capelli Sport Stadium next Saturday against the New York Red Bulls II.

  • Rochester claimed victory in both meetings between the clubs this past season, with the Battery having been held without a win in the series since the 2014 season.
