City Islanders host home opener as in-state rival Steel FC visits

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Harrisburg City Islanders host their home opener on Saturday night at FNB Field against in-state rival Bethlehem Steel FC, with both clubs looking to build on impressive wins in their last outings. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Harrisburg City Islanders news and notes

  • Current record: 1-1-0, 3pts

  • The City Islanders took a 1-0 victory against the New York Red Bulls II on April 5 in their last outing to earn their first win of the season.

  • Manolo Sanchez scored his first goal for the club in the win, scoring against his former club in the process. Sanchez had competed for the Red Bulls II in the 2015 season.

  • Harrisburg defender Jamie Thomas was named to the USL Team of the Week this past Tuesday for his performance, as he recorded five tackles, three clearances and two interceptions in the contest.

  • The City Islanders have averaged 370 passes in their first two games of the season, recording a 72.3 percent success rate.

  • Steel FC got a pair of goals by Seku Conneh as the club earned a 2-0 victory against FC Cincinnati last Sunday at Goodman Stadium for its first win this campaign.

  • Conneh had an early penalty kick saved, but rebounded to strike twice and claimed the USL Player of the Week award this past Tuesday.

  • Bethlehem goalkeeper Jake McGuire recorded five saves to earn a shutout in his first professional start. The rookie was acquired by the Philadelphia Union after being selected by Houston in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, and sent on loan to Steel FC.

  • Steel FC’s 78 percent passing accuracy mark puts it tied for fifth in the league alongside Louisville City FC and Reno 1868 FC.
