CHICAGO – The U.S. Soccer Federation announced the draw for the First and Second Round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday as the record 18 USL participants in this year’s tournament learned their potential opponents in the Second Round on either May 16 or 17.

Among the contests are two potential intra-city clashes, with Louisville City FC facing a potential clash with the Premier Development League’s Derby City Rovers, and the Charlotte Independence having the chance to face the PDL’s Charlotte Eagles on May 17.

Four USL clubs are guaranteed to be at home in the Second Round, with the Tampa Bay Rowdies set to play host to either the PDL’s The Villages FC or the Jacksonville Armada U-23 at Al Lang Stadium. Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC will face either the PDL’s FC Tucson or the Colorado Rush at Weidner Field, while Sacramento Republic FC will play host to either the Sonoma County Sol or Anahuac FC at Papa Murphy’s Park.

The Rochester Rhinos – who remain the last non-MLS side to claim the Open Cup in 1999 – will also open on home turf as they welcome either FC Motown or New Jersey Copa FC to Capelli Sport Stadium.

An intriguing potential clash could arrive out west, with Phoenix Rising FC looking at a trip to face historic PDL club the Fresno Fuego at the Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium should the Fuego advance through their First-Round contest.

Other USL clubs that are set to head on the road for their first games in the tournament include inaugural entry Reno 1868 FC, who would visit either the PDL’s Sounders FC U23 or OSA FC in the Pacific Northwest for their debut in the tournament. Orange County SC will also be on the road against either the PDL’s FC Golden State Force or Outbreak FC, while the Pittsburgh Riverhounds will visit either Chicago FC United of the PDL or Grand Rapids FC.

Some USL clubs will have to wait to see whether they will play host in the Second Round, with OKC Energy FC potentially facing a trek to the west coast against the PDL’s Ventura County Fusion should the Fusion defeat Moreno Valley Futbol Club in the First Round. FC Cincinnati could also make a trip to face the Des Moines Menace should the historic PDL club advance past AFC Cleveland, while the Richmond Kickers could visit Fredericksburg FC, or play host to Christos FC.
