From the buzz of a sellout crowd of 8,081 at Toyota Field, to the recognition of top Super Y League players in the multi-day USL Experience, to the play of San Antonio FC itself, Saturday night was scripted perfectly in the host team’s eyes.

San Antonio routed the LA Galaxy II 3-0 in a well-rounded effort that gave the second-year club its second win in as many games to open 2017.

“I’m very proud of our guys for the way they worked from the first whistle,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “There was a lot of positive energy that the players showed. We got off to a good start and I thought today we scored three very good goals.”

It truly was a banner evening for a number of reasons, as everyone got involved – captain Michael Reed, Rafa Castillo for the opening goal, and then Castillo’s former San Antonio Scorpions teammate Billy Forbes, who tallied a goal and an assist in his return to the Alamo City.

“Throughout the week I’ve wanted to score,” Forbes said. “To get out there and score gets a lot of emotion out of me. I’m back and it feels good to be back.”

Reed credited the unselfishness and collective attack as the hallmarks of Saturday’s win, which was a big one considering SAFC didn’t beat the Galaxy II last season.

“It was a good performance from us tonight,” Reed said. “We have a lot of guys pushing up on the attack and I think what’s even more exciting is the selfless runs that we have. You have Cesar [Elizondo] running in, guys running in and out, and it’s a lot of fun to be a part of.”

Reed was one of a number of players last season who hit the injury bug, and it can certainly be argued that this was the crucial element affecting their ultimate outcome shy of the postseason picture.

Now that he and the rest of the lineup have a clean bill of health, SAFC has plenty to be optimistic about moving forward to continue this hot start to the campaign.

“We take it one game at a time and I think as long as we have guys stay healthy it’ll be a successful season,” Reed said. “For myself, I have to stay strong and fit, but having guys come off the bench is positive. It’s not a one-man show; it’s a team effort. On and off the field, everyone is looking out for each other and it’s very humbling.”
