Former A-League player joined by Lewis, Mensah and Mohamed

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Harrisburg City Islanders announced on Thursday the club had signed veteran defender Tiago Calvano ahead of the start of the 2017 USL regular season. The Brazilian will be joined by goalkeeper Sean Lewis, defender Abass Mohamed and forward Ropapa Mensah in Harrisburg. The signings are pending league and federation approval.

Calvano played for both the Newcastle Jets and Sydney City in Australia’s A-League after a career in Europe that had seen him compete for Fortuna Dusseldorf, MSV Duisburg and BSC Young Boys. Most recently, the 35-year-old played for Minnesota United FC from 2014-2016, where he scored two goals in 71 appearances and was named to the All-League Team in 2014.

"There's a long tradition of professional soccer with the Harrisburg City Islanders," Calvano said. "I appreciate their vision for the organization's future, and I look forward to contributing to the team's success and being a part of this community."

Lewis joined the City Islanders after having most recently played for Jacksonville Armada FC. A former standout in the Premier Development League for the Panama City Beach Pirates, Lewis had a strong collegiate career at Western Michigan University, where he was named to the All-Mid-American-Conference Second Team and posted a 0.92 GAA.

"Sean performed at a high level during preseason," said City Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. "Adding him to the roster gives us three solid ‘keepers."

Mensah is regarded as one of the budding stars in the Ghanaian Premier League. In the team's recent match against Hearts of Oak, he was named the player of the match. Although he was not able to net a goal, he was a terror in the attacking zone. He set up passes in dangerous areas and created opportunities off of the attack.

"The Harrisburg City Islanders are one of the best teams in the USL and this is a great place for me to develop as a player," said the 19-year-old. "I am excited to belong to the club and look forward to helping in every way possible this season."

Mohammed comes to the Islanders after a short stint with Inter Allies. In 2016, Mohammed helped lead his Medeama FC team to a Ghana Super Cup Championship.

"Abass is another one of those guys bringing something different to the team with his experience," said Becher. "I hope that he's able to develop and grow with us this year."

The 24-year-old Ghanaian was the lead man for Medeama. His two goals for the club in a 2-0 win against Memalodi Sundowns at the Essipong Stadium helped the club to qualify for the Group stage of the Confederations Cup.

"When you are offered a spot on one of the top teams in the USL, you don't pass it up," said Mohamed. "Playing with the Islanders is an important step for me and I hope to develop into a top-notch player with this organization."
