RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC midfielder Junior Burgos has been selected to represent the El Salvador national team during the upcoming FIFA international, becoming the first player in 1868 FC history to be called upon by a national team.

“This is a big moment for our club,” said 1868 FC General Manager Andy Smith. “Having a player called up to their respective national team shows the caliber of talent we have in Reno.”

On March 22, Burgos and the El Salvador national team will face the country of Curaçao for the first friendly. The following match will be played on March 26 against Club Deportivo Olimpia of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras (Honduran National Professional Football League) in Houston, Texas at BBVA Compass stadium.

“It’s always an honor to represent your country,” said Burgos. “I’m really excited for the opportunity to compete at the international level and bring my experience back to Reno.”

Burgos has previously played six games with the El Salvador national team. The midfielder has also competed alongside his fellow countrymen in the Central American Cup. Burgos has previously competed against top-tier international talent from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and Panama.

Burgos will return to 1868 FC in time for the club’s second game of the 2017 USL regular season on Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m. PT against the Vancouver Whitecaps 2 at Greater Nevada Field.
