PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti – The New York Red Bulls’ Derrick Etienne Jr., who helped the New York Red Bulls II claim the 2016 USL Cup, was named on Friday in Haiti’s squad that will face Nicaragua for a place at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup over the upcoming 10 days.

The home-and-home series between the two countries kicks off on March 24 in Haiti, and concludes on March 28 in Nicaragua. The winner will earn the final place at the Gold Cup, and be placed in a group alongside the United States, Panama and Martinique.

Etienne made his first start in Major League Soccer last weekend as the Red Bulls hosted D.C. the Colorado Rapids. Etienne recorded five goals and six assists last season for the Red Bulls II in the USL, and also scored in the USL Cup Final as New York defeated the Swope Park Rangers.

The 20-year-old was also named as the No. 3 player in the 2016 USL 20 Under 20. This past January he scored his first goal for the Grenadiers in a 4-3 victory against Trinidad & Tobago in Caribbean qualifying for the Gold Cup.

He is joined in the squad by former Charlotte Independence defender Mechak Jerome, who earned USL All-League honors in 2015. Former Red Bulls II defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste was also named in the squad, as was midfielder Sebastien Thuriere, who had previously competed for the Charleston Battery and San Antonio FC in the past two seasons.
