CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery scored three first-half goals as they took a 4-1 victory against Coastal Carolina University in a preseason exhibition on Tuesday night at MUSC Health Stadium. Heviel Cordoves and Ataullah Guerra both scored early to lead the Battery to victory.

“We did very well tonight,” said Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser following the game. “We moved the ball, we moved it around, we didn’t let them ever get pressure on us. I was a little disappointed we gave up a goal, but you can’t be too disappointed when you score four and have other chances. It was a good result.”

Charleston took the lead in just the third minute when Cordoves continued his recent run of form. The Cuban forward took advantage of a through-ball by Guerra and shot low into the right corner of the net. Nine minutes later Cordoves returned the favor as he set up Guerra with a nice give-and-go at the top of the penalty area that allowed the Trinidad & Tobago international to double the lead.

Guerra’s Soca Warriors teammate Neveal Hackshaw made it 3-0 just before the half-hour mark as he broke in on the right side of the penalty area and curled home a finish into the left corner, and that would remain the score until the halftime break. The Chanticleers pulled a goal back in the second half, but Ricardo Garbanzo scored against his alma mater with eight minutes to go to wrap up the victory.

With the Battery’s home opener for the 2017 USL regular season now just 11 days away, Anhaeuser said he was pleased with the way things had progressed over the past month of preseason.

“I think things have gone well, from the Challenge Cup to our games with North Carolina FC and the college teams, we’ve played Coastal twice and the College of Charleston, they’ve been great tests and we’ve been able to build us up as a team,” said Anhaeuser. “We’ve done well being able to get players minutes on the field and get them time, and everybody’s contributed, they’ve done well and moved the ball and done things in the right way, and that’s all you want to do in preseason.”
