COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Zealand international Chris James scored twice as Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC earned a 3-1 victory against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in a preseason friendly at Weidner Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory kept the Switchbacks undefeated this preseason as they prepare for their third season in the USL.

The Switchbacks showed their strength early as they controlled the majority of possession as well as getting a number of shots off in the attacking third. The hosts finally broke down the Mountain Lions in the 39th minute as they broke down the right side. Shane Malcolm beat his man and James was there to put away his pass.

The lead wouldn't last long, however, as UCCS was able to find an equalizer in the 42nd minute after playing the ball just out of Switchbacks goalkeeper Dan Jackson's reach. Colorado Springs regained the lead just before halftime, though, as Kevaughn Frater was brought down in the penalty area after beating his man in the box. James stepped up and calmly converted from the penalty spot to give the Switchbacks a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The Switchbacks made a number of changes in the second half as the side continued to build fitness ahead of its opening game of the season in two weeks. Despite numerous second-half chances, it wasn’t until the 84th minute that the Switchbacks put the game away. Connor Bevans broke down the right side and played a ball to Jack Jones, who put the shot away for a 3-1 victory.

"It was a good exercise," said Switcbacks Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "They still have work to do in preparing for the season. But, we're starting to put things together."

The Switchbacks will wrap up their preseason with a home match against Harpos FC on Saturday, March 18th at 7 p.m. MT.
